Do different social networking sites offer different benefits and drawbacks?

I believe there are several factors that decide benefits and drawbacks to social networking sites. First of all, it depends on which social networking site is being used. Another factor is the purpose for which the social networking site is being used. Another is who is using the social networking site.

Facebook can be used for social networking, and I think a good reason to use Facebook for business would be to connect with and grow your customer base.

Instagram, which I personally do not use, seems to be more of a social networking site that is used more for growing a fan base, and while yes it can be used for social networking, it seems to sit more on the side of social media.

LinkedIn is a much more professional type of social networking site that is great for employers looking for perspective employees and vice versa among other things.

If used for those reasons, I could see many benefits from social networking sites, and depending on what a person is using them for, combining multiple networking sites could also be beneficial. I can imagine that depending on the site, you could get a less than professional response from users. You could also run the risk of giving too much personal info instead of focusing on the main reason you are using the site.

What factors might influence whether Facebook has negative influences, like links with depression, versus positive influences, such as boosts in self-esteem?

I feel that it depends on what a person puts on their Facebook posts, the friends they have connected with on there, and the groups that they join. The thing about negative influences on Facebook is that sometimes you can't avoid seeing something negative or triggering. You can always have posts from certain people hidden from your Newsfeed, or make sure you aren't following certain Facebook pages, but that doesn't stop the initial post from being seen.

Also, something that depends on the actions you choose on Facebook, you can in fact find very positive groups or pages, and just choose to befriend those that provide positive and uplifting posts.

Another factor is the information that users put into their posts. While venting can sometimes feel necessary, it is best to keep personal information to trusted family or close friends. Sometimes sharing personal situations can lead to back lash from others who see the posts, or that information getting to those who should not have access to personal information, or personal matters.
